Small Differences, More Capacity: Why Loading Efficiency Matters

Small Differences, More Capacity: Why Loading Efficiency Matters

Twenty centimetres does not sound like much.

But in road transport, small differences in usable loading space can have a surprisingly large impact.

In one of our recent videos, we showed how the additional length of our trailers creates room for 34 Euro pallet positions instead of the usual 33.

That extra pallet is a nice example, but loading efficiency is about much more than fitting one additional pallet into a trailer.

Every centimetre of loading space counts

Transport capacity is limited. Every truck has a fixed amount of floor space, volume and permitted weight.

The better that space is used, the more efficiently goods can move.

An extra pallet position can sometimes prevent part of a shipment from having to move separately. Across recurring transport flows, those small gains can add up quickly.

But maximum capacity does not automatically mean maximum efficiency.

The dimensions of the goods, their weight, stackability and destination all influence how a trailer can actually be loaded.

A full trailer is not always an efficient trailer

Thirty four available pallet positions do not necessarily mean that every shipment should contain thirty four pallets.

Weight distribution still matters. So does load stability.

A trailer carrying relatively light goods may reach its maximum volume long before its maximum permitted weight. Heavy products can create exactly the opposite situation.

The challenge for transport planners is therefore not simply to fill every available centimetre, but to find the most practical combination of:

  1. available floor space
  2. shipment weight
  3. pallet dimensions
  4. loading & unloading sequence
  5. route planning
  6. delivery requirements

That is where operational planning starts to make a real difference.

Standard pallets make planning easier

Standardisation helps transport networks work efficiently.

When goods are prepared on standard Euro pallets, planners know much more accurately how much loading space a shipment will require.

Non standard pallets, oversized packaging or products extending beyond the pallet footprint can quickly change that calculation.

A few centimetres of overhang might seem insignificant in a warehouse, but repeated across several pallets it can mean that a planned loading configuration no longer fits.

Good transport planning therefore starts before the goods reach the trailer.

Packaging affects transport capacity too

How products are packed has a direct influence on how efficiently they can be transported.

Poorly stacked pallets, unnecessary packaging or unstable loads can take up more space than required and restrict the way other goods can be positioned around them.

Well prepared transport units make loading easier, improve stability and help planners use available capacity more effectively.

Efficiency and safety therefore often go hand in hand.

Why loading efficiency matters

Better utilisation of each trailer can have several practical advantages.

More goods can move within the same transport flow, unnecessary additional kilometres can potentially be avoided and transport capacity can be used more effectively.

For customers with frequent or higher volume shipments, even relatively small improvements can become meaningful over time.

That is why we look beyond simply moving a shipment from A to B.

Trailer configuration, pallet dimensions, consolidation, routing and loading sequence are all part of the equation.

Sometimes 20 centimetres really do matter

Our recent video makes the point in a very simple way.

A standard configuration provides 33 Euro pallet positions. With the additional trailer length available in our fleet, that becomes 34 pallet positions.

Just one extra pallet.

But transport is often exactly about details like these.

Because when thousands of pallets move through a network, making slightly better use of every journey can make a significant difference.
