Blind Spot Safety: A Small Lesson That Can Make a Big Difference

Every day, trucks and vulnerable road users share the same roads.

For experienced drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, that may seem completely normal. But for children, it is not always easy to understand just how limited a truck driver’s visibility can be.

That is why CG inspired by Corneel Geerts regularly welcomes schools for practical blind spot lessons around our trucks.

What is a truck blind spot?

A truck driver has a much higher seating position than the driver of a passenger car. While that provides a good overview of the road ahead, there are also areas around the vehicle that are difficult or impossible to see directly.

Cyclists and pedestrians can disappear from view, especially when they are very close to the front or side of the truck.

One simple rule is therefore worth remembering:

If you cannot see the driver, there is a good chance the driver cannot see you either.

Understanding that principle can make a real difference in everyday traffic.

Experiencing it from the driver’s seat

Most interventions are not random. They are often the system doing its job, flagging risk. Below are the common T1 mistakes that repeatedly cause delays on Swiss and Turkish routes.

During our blind spot lessons, pupils do not only receive an explanation from outside the truck.

They climb into the driver’s seat themselves.

From there, they can see just how large a truck is and experience how quickly classmates standing next to the vehicle can disappear from view.

It turns an abstract warning into something very concrete.

For many children, seeing the blind spot for themselves is much more memorable than simply hearing about it in the classroom.

Road safety is a shared responsibility

If you want a simple habit that prevents the majority of transit headaches, use a “three-way match” before the truck leaves:

Professional drivers are trained to remain alert to vulnerable road users, but safe traffic also depends on everyone understanding each other’s position on the road.

Keeping enough distance, staying visible and avoiding the areas directly alongside or in front of a truck are simple habits that can help reduce risk.

The goal is simple: help children understand trucks a little better today, so they can move around them more safely tomorrow.
