When Is a Pallet Really Stable Enough for Transport?

When Is a Pallet Really Stable Enough for Transport?

A pallet can look perfectly stable in a warehouse and still become a problem once it is on the road.

Braking, cornering and acceleration all put forces on the load. Whether a pallet is truly transport-ready therefore depends on more than how it looks while standing still.

The 26° principle

One way to assess the stability of a palletised load is a tilt test.

The pallet is placed on a tilting platform and gradually inclined. A commonly used benchmark is around 26°. At that angle, the load should remain stable without noticeable movement or deformation.

Why 26°?

A tilt of approximately 26.6° corresponds to a force of around 0.5 g, making it a useful reference when assessing the lateral forces a load may experience during road transport.

The test provides a practical indication of whether the combination of stacking, packaging, wrapping and securing is sufficient to keep the load together.

A straight pallet is not necessarily a stable pallet

Problems often only become visible once forces are applied.

Poor stacking, insufficient wrapping or too much freedom of movement between products can cause a load to shift, even if the pallet looked perfectly stable before departure.

The consequences range from damaged goods and packaging to difficult unloading and, more importantly, increased safety risks during transport.

Stability starts with preparation

How goods are prepared has a direct impact on how they behave on the road.

Correct stacking patterns, suitable packaging materials, sufficient stretch or shrink film and, where necessary, strapping help turn individual products into one stable transport unit.

Belgian road traffic rules also place responsibilities on the parties involved in preparing and loading goods. Packaging and load preparation must therefore be suitable for safe transport before the vehicle leaves the loading dock.

Safe transport starts before departure

Drivers and transport companies play an important role in load securing, but safe transport starts earlier in the process.

A correctly prepared pallet reduces the risk of movement, damage and unsafe situations once the journey begins.

Because the real test of a pallet is not how it stands in the warehouse.

It is how it behaves on the road.

Safe loads. Safe journeys. Together.
